Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell rejects coaching rumours and proposes AFL list overhaul
Sam Mitchell, head coach of the Hawthorn Football Club, told reporters he is "very happy at Hawthorn" and dismissed speculation that he is considering offers from Tasmania, Carlton or Essendon. He said the rumours are "no story" and that he is focused on the club while contract talks for a post‑2027 extension continue in the background.
Mitchell also used the platform to suggest a radical change to AFL list management, arguing there should be a minimum list size but no maximum, allowing clubs to choose any number of players they can manage. The proposal comes as the league prepares for Tasmania’s entry in 2028 and a review of rookie list rules.
