Sam Nartey George addresses illegal mining and announces telephony audit

Ghanaian Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has addressed criticisms regarding the government's handling of illegal mining, known as ‘galamsey’. George questioned whether his ministry holds the mandate to oversee mining activities, noting that the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources leads those policy efforts. He emphasized that anyone involved in illegal mining should face legal consequences regardless of their political affiliation with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) or the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Separately, Minister George announced a national audit of the Rural Telephony Programme. The audit aims to verify completed works and ensure taxpayers receive value for money by examining cell sites inherited from the previous administration. The ministry intends to independently verify contractor reports and assess the overall state of Ghana’s telephone network infrastructure to identify connectivity gaps.
