Sam Smith discusses fame, mental health, and new album

Singer-songwriter Sam Smith has shared insights into their relationship with fame and mental health. In recent interviews, Smith revealed that a decision made several years ago to stop taking selfies with fans in an effort to protect their privacy initially led to depression. Smith noted the emotional difficulty of feeling as though they were upsetting people daily.

Through therapy, Smith has found a healthier way to navigate public interactions, stating, “I actually have started to find the happiness and the joy of meeting people. I’m a healthy person right now, so I’m able to juggle more.” Smith also reflected on the challenges of navigating fame, identity, and changing pronouns publicly during their 20s.

These reflections come ahead of the August 21 release of Smith's fifth studio album, ‘Hazel Eyes’. Smith described the upcoming project as a love letter to their fiancé, Christian Cowan, noting his encouragement throughout the recording process.
