Sam Smith praises Madonna for support during ‘Unholy’ controversy
Singer Sam Smith has revealed that pop icon Madonna provided significant personal support during the intense backlash following the release of the 2022 hit song ‘Unholy’, a collaboration with Kim Petras.
In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, Smith described Madonna as a “lifeline to queer people” and a maternal figure who reached out immediately when the controversy surrounding the song’s provocative imagery and Grammy performance began. Smith noted that Madonna remains highly attentive to news affecting the LGBTQ+ community and its artists.
Smith also addressed their own career evolution and the public reaction to their changing appearance and artistic direction. Ahead of the release of their upcoming album, ‘Hazel Eyes’, the singer reflected on being a polarizing figure, comparing their public reception to the polarizing nature of Marmite, while stating they no longer “torture” themselves over past decisions.
