Samajwadi Party appoints Abdul Mateen Siddiqui as Uttarakhand head
The Samajwadi Party has appointed Abdul Mateen Siddiqui as the president of its Uttarakhand unit, marking the first time a Muslim leader has headed the state unit. Siddiqui, a 66-year-old businessman from Nainital, replaces Shubham Giri, who previously served as working president.
Following his appointment, Siddiqui announced the immediate dissolution of all existing state, district, and city-level executive committees, as well as the party’s frontal organisations. This restructuring is intended to rebuild the party organization from the ground up in preparation for the 2027 Assembly elections in Uttarakhand.
Siddiqui has been tasked with focusing on approximately 20 Assembly constituencies with significant Muslim populations, specifically across the Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun, and Nainital districts. The move is seen as a strategic effort to consolidate support among Muslim voters ahead of the elections, which are expected to coincide with those in neighboring Uttar Pradesh.
