Samaná advances sustainability through culinary and environmental initiatives

The Samaná region in the Dominican Republic is advancing sustainability initiatives through both culinary and environmental projects. Nine restaurants are participating in the third edition of the “Plato del Verano” competition. This contest aims to promote sustainable gastronomy, local seasonal products, and traditional culinary recipes. Supported by the Good Governance Project and various environmental organizations, the competition requires participants to respect fishing seasons, avoid plastics, and utilize local ingredients such as coconut and mango.

In environmental conservation, Cayo Levantado Resort has become home to the first accredited arboretum in the Dominican Republic. The site received Level I accreditation from the international ArbNet program and The Morton Arboretum. In collaboration with the Eco-Bahia Foundation and the Dr. Rafael M. Moscoso National Botanical Garden, the project has identified and protected 308 plant species, including endangered native flora like the guayacán. The arboretum serves as a living museum and educational resource for visitors.
