Samaria Gorge closed due to heavy rainfall
The Samaria Gorge in Crete is closed to visitors on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, due to forecasted heavy rainfall and storms. The decision was made by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization (OFYPEKA) following updated weather reports from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service.
Forecasts indicate rainfall levels that exceed safety limits established by the Chania Regional Unit. Specifically, rainfall is expected to reach up to 10.5 mm in the Xyloskalo area and up to 8 mm in Agia Roumeli. Consequently, access to the gorge is prohibited from both the northern entrance at Xyloskalo and the southern entrance at Agia Roumeli for the duration of the day.
