Samarinda Preserves 17 Heritage Sites to Boost City Identity

The Samarinda City Education and Culture Office announced the preservation of 17 cultural heritage sites, including Shiratal Mustaqim Mosque, Thien le Kong Temple, the National Awakening Monument and La Mohang Daeng Mangkona Cemetery. The sites are being upgraded into public spaces that serve educational purposes for students and the wider community.

The program pairs physical conservation with stricter local regulations to protect the sites from rapid land‑use change. It also links the heritage locations with museums, digital exhibitions and annual art festivals, and provides capacity‑building support for local artists and cultural practitioners. Officials say the initiative aims to strengthen Samarinda’s cultural identity and attract tourism amid fast‑paced urban development.
