Samaritan’s Purse celebrates 30 years of Christmas in a Shoebox

The international gift campaign “Christmas in a Shoebox,” organized by Samaritan’s Purse, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Since its inception in Germany 30 years ago, the initiative has provided shoeboxes filled with gifts to more than 244 million children worldwide.

Participants fill shoeboxes with new items such as toys, school supplies, hygiene products, and clothing for children aged 2 to 14. To ensure durability and safety during long-distance transport, the organization has requested that participants no longer include sweets or fragile items, focusing instead on sustainable and long-lasting gifts.

Local efforts to support the campaign are active across various regions. In Germany, collection points include specific locations in Jülich and Lich. In South Tyrol, teams are collecting boxes for distribution to Eastern Europe, following a previous year where over 3,200 packages were gathered. Additionally, the THW Kiel handball club is participating for the sixth time, distributing boxes to fans at the MERKUR Ostseehalle to support children in countries such as Ukraine, Moldova, and the Baltic states.
