Samaritan’s Purse defends Christmas gift campaign against church criticism

The Christian aid organization Samaritan’s Purse has issued an open letter to the Diocese of Trier responding to criticisms regarding its “Operation Christmas Child” gift campaign. In the letter, board members Sylke Busenbender and Marina Nobiling rejected claims that the initiative uses the needs of children primarily for missionary purposes.

The organization clarified that the campaign is intended as a gift-giving initiative to bring joy and a sense of value to children in difficult living conditions, rather than a formal development project. They argued that mission work and sustainable aid are not contradictory, stating that “mission is not the opposite of sustainable help.”

Addressing concerns about sustainability, Samaritan’s Purse noted that their impact includes long-term relationships and personal hope, citing their humanitarian and medical work in global crisis zones. They also emphasized that participation in subsequent faith-based programs is entirely voluntary and not a condition for receiving gifts.
