Samarkand to host record-breaking 46th World Chess Olympiad

Samarkand, Uzbekistan, is set to host the 46th World Chess Olympiad at the Silk Road international tourism centre starting 15 September. This event marks the first time Central Asia will host this major team tournament. A record-breaking 398 teams are scheduled to compete, including 208 in the men's Open section and 190 in the women's section, surpassing the previous record of 380 teams set in Budapest in 2024.

The tournament will consist of 11 rounds and conclude on 27 September. Additionally, the 3rd Chess Paralympiad will take place in Samarkand from 10 to 18 September, featuring a record 41 participating teams.

In the men's section, the United States holds the top seed, followed by India in second and Uzbekistan in third. The Uzbekistan men's team has risen 15 places in the FIDE rankings to sixth, while the women's team has risen 17 places to 21st. Following the Olympiad, the 97th FIDE Congress will be held from 19 to 28 September, which will include the FIDE presidential election.
