Sameer Anjaan criticizes Bollywood music trends and Arijit Singh’s retirement

Veteran Hindi film lyricist Sameer Anjaan has commented on the current state of the music industry, specifically addressing singer Arijit Singh’s decision to retire from playback singing on January 27, 2026.

Speaking on the ‘Game Changers: The Music Series’ podcast, Anjaan suggested that Singh’s exit is linked to a lack of musical variety and the monotony of modern compositions. He noted that Singh felt he was not receiving a diverse range of songs, as many were tailored strictly to his specific style, leading to exhaustion.

Anjaan also criticized contemporary filmmaking trends, specifically targeting director Aditya Dhar’s film ‘Dhurandhar’. He accused the production of ruining classic songs by using them as background filler during violent action sequences rather than treating them as standalone musical pieces. He further expressed concern regarding the industry's practice of repurposing iconic melodies without the permission of original creators.
