SAMES announces 48-hour strike in Senegal
The Autonomous Union of Doctors of Senegal (SAMES) has announced a 48-hour total strike scheduled for September 8 and 9. The union, represented by Secretary General Dr. Diabel Dramé, stated that the action is a response to the government's failure to address a list of demands submitted in 2023.
Demands brought forward by the union include improvements to working conditions, indemnity regimes, human resource management, professional training, and healthcare infrastructure. While the strike is intended to be total, the union noted that emergency services and minimum required services will be maintained.
Negotiations regarding these demands had previously been interrupted in early 2024 due to the country's socio-political situation. SAMES officials indicated they had granted a period of grace to the new administration but concluded that no plausible response had been provided following the expiration of a strike notice on August 9.
