SAMES announces 72-hour nationwide strike in Senegal

The Autonomous Union of Doctors, Pharmacists, and Dentists of Senegal (SAMES) has announced a 72-hour nationwide strike scheduled for September 28, 29, and 30, 2026. This decision follows an extraordinary meeting held on September 25, where union leaders determined that previous strikes on September 23 and 24 saw a 99.64% observance rate, yet failed to yield concrete responses from the state.

The union, in coordination with the Collective of Specialized Doctors, Pharmacists, and Dentists (COMES) and the Association of Interns and Former Interns of Senegalese Hospitals (AIAIHS), expressed dissatisfaction with discussions held with the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene. They claim the government has shown no real willingness to address their demands.

Key grievances include the establishment of a special professional status for medical practitioners, improved recruitment and career advancement conditions, revisions to indemnity regimes, increased retirement pensions, and reforms to medical training. Additionally, the union is calling for better healthcare infrastructure, medical equipment, and human resources. During the strike, SAMES has stated that only emergency services will remain operational.
