SAMHSA report highlights gaps in addiction and chronic illness care

A report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) highlights critical gaps in addiction treatment, noting that individuals with substance use disorders often suffer from unaddressed chronic physical illnesses. These comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, are leading causes of premature mortality. The report identifies structural silos in the U.S. healthcare system—where behavioral health and general medical care are financed and organized separately—as a primary barrier to effective, coordinated care.

In a related development regarding opioid addiction, recent regulatory overhauls for methadone clinics have shown positive results. Following federal changes in 2024 that increased flexibility for ‘take-home’ medications and reduced mandatory counseling requirements, data suggests a significant shift in practice. Mark Parrino, president of the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence, stated that more than 75% of opioid treatment programs have implemented these changes, leading to increased patient retention in treatment.
