Sami Truth Commission urges Swedish state to apologize for historical abuses
The Sami Truth Commission has submitted its final 1,100-page report to Swedish Culture Minister Parisa Liljestrand, concluding a four-year investigation into 400 years of state and church policies regarding the Sami people.
Commission chair Lena Nyberg stated that the state must first acknowledge historical abuses, including forced displacements, loss of land, and the erosion of language and culture. The report specifically highlights the “despicable” treatment of Sami children who were forced into nomad schools or workhouses, which severed familial and cultural ties.
The commission urges the Swedish government and parliament to issue a formal apology to elderly Sami individuals affected by these practices. Additionally, the report recommends legislative changes to ensure Sami interests receive special weight when weighed against national interests such as mining and wind power. Other proposals include increasing Sami-related knowledge within government agencies, municipalities, and regions.
