Sammi Awuku questions absence of ministers from Mahama drug meeting
Sammi Awuku, Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, has raised concerns regarding the absence of sector ministers from a high-level meeting convened by President John Dramani Mahama to address narcotics trafficking and border security.
The meeting, scheduled at Jubilee House, aims to review Ghana’s security arrangements to prevent the transit of illicit drugs. While the Presidency invited heads of various institutions—including the Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Shippers Authority, Ghana Airports Company Limited, the Ghana Police Service, and the Narcotics Control Commission—Awuku questioned why their supervising ministers were not included.
Awuku noted that the heads of maritime, shipping, and airport agencies fall under the Ministry of Transport, while the police and narcotics commission fall under the Ministry of the Interior. He expressed concern that excluding these ministers could lead to issues with supervision and implementation, potentially creating an unnecessary layer of coordination rather than utilizing existing ministerial structures.
