Sammy Mahdi promotes personalism as the core of Christian democracy

Sammy Mahdi, leader of the CD&V party, is promoting a political vision centered on “personalism” to redefine Christian democracy in Belgium. In recent interviews with De Standaard and De Wereld Morgen, Mahdi argued that this philosophy prioritizes community-based care and interpersonal connections, positioning his movement as a middle ground between leftist collectivism and right-wing individualism.

Mahdi emphasizes the importance of intermediate organizations—such as local school boards, neighborhood committees, and street committees—as the essential bedrock of a healthy society. He asserts that societal well-being should be driven by citizens uniting at the grassroots level rather than being delegated solely to state bureaucracy.

Addressing the tension between the ideal of universal fraternity and his party’s support for stricter border enforcement and tightened family reunification frameworks, Mahdi utilizes a tripartite lens. He identifies liberalism with liberty and socialism with equality, while placing Christian democracy under the banner of “fraternity,” arguing that this focus on brotherhood provides necessary meaning in a hyper-individualized era.
