Sammy Smith secured a victory at Talladega Superspeedway after making a last-lap pass on teammate Carson Kvapil. The win ended a 53-race winless streak for Smith, but the result created tension regarding championship strategy for JR Motorsports.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. expressed bittersweet emotions following the race, noting that while he is happy for Smith, the outcome was not ideal for the team’s title contenders. JR Motorsports had entered the race with a strategy for drivers lower in the standings to support teammates Justin Allgaier and Carson Kvapil in their championship pursuits.
