Samoa Rugby Advances with Australian League Partnership Amid Governance Crisis

Samoa has joined the Australia‑backed Pacific Rugby League Partnership, a programme aimed at deepening economic ties, supporting high‑performance pathways, coaching, governance and community participation. The deal is expected to generate investment in stadiums, training facilities, tourism and broadcasting, giving Samoan businesses new commercial opportunities.

At the same time, the Samoan government has withdrawn its recognition and funding of Lakapi Samoa, the national rugby union, citing unresolved internal issues and political interference. A new Samoa Rugby Football Union led by former prop Matafeo George Latu has been launched. Captain Theo McFarland and coach Lemalu Tusi Pisi wrote to Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt warning that the dispute could lead to World Rugby sanctions and jeopardise Samoa’s place at the 2027 Rugby World Cup. World Rugby has said it is conducting an independent investigation into the governance conflict.
