Samoa rugby faces possible suspension before 2027 World Cup
The Samoan government has withdrawn its recognition and financial support for the national rugby union, Lakapi Samoa, citing unresolved internal issues and division. Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt announced the decision and warned that a rival governing body may be created if the union does not resign.
World Rugby has given the Samoan authorities until Friday to accept a review of the withdrawal. Failure to do so could trigger a four‑year suspension from all international rugby competitions. The governing body says dialogue remains active and no formal suspension deadline has been set.
Samoa, a regular at the Rugby World Cup and currently ranked 20th, had already qualified for the 2027 tournament in Australia. If a suspension is imposed, the spot would most likely go to Belgium, which narrowly missed qualification in the final repechage. Opposition leader Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi condemned the government’s move as “political madness”.
