Sampdoria mourns passing of club legend Pietro Piero Battara
UC Sampdoria has announced the passing of Pietro Piero Battara, a legendary figure in the club's history, at the age of 90. Known by the nickname ‘Batman’, Battara made 243 appearances as a goalkeeper for the club.
Battara joined Sampdoria from Vicenza in 1961 and became a key player following the arrival of manager Fulvio Bernardini. He played a significant role in the club's promotion to Serie A during the 1966/67 season and helped secure subsequent stays in the top flight. After retiring from active play in 1974 following a stint with Bologna, he became a pioneer in goalkeeper coaching at Coverciano.
He later returned to Genoa as part of the technical staff under Vujadin Boškov, where he famously mentored Gianluca Pagliuca. The club expressed its condolences to his family, including his son Massimo and nephew Daniele.
