Sampieri level crossing in Sicily deemed dangerous after serious accident

The provincial road 40 crossing at Sampieri, a steep and poorly signposted level crossing near Scicli, has been labeled a “grave and unacceptable danger” by the local association Orizzonti, led by former deputy Orazio Ragusa. The warning follows a recent crash in which a car lost control on the sudden dip, struck a barrier and rolled over, causing serious injuries and property damage. Orizzonti’s formal request to the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Ragusa calls for urgent safety upgrades, including high‑visibility vertical signs placed at least 200 m before the crossing, emergency lighting, acoustic warnings and other measures to force drivers to reduce speed.

The association argues that the current lack of adequate warning signs has repeatedly led to accidents, especially for inexperienced drivers unfamiliar with the road. The consortium’s response will determine whether further incidents can be avoided.
