Sampson County officials investigate unidentified hog waste spills

An unidentified truck driver left a trail of waste across several locations in Sampson County, North Carolina, on Monday morning. The spills occurred at five different points along a roughly six-mile stretch of roadway, including White Oak Church Road, Fredrick Road, McKenzie Road, The Avenue, Bonnetsville Road, and Zoar Church Road.

Sampson County Fire Marshal Prentice Madgar stated that the waste appeared to be coming from a “dead box from a hog house.” Officials noted that the driver seemed to dump waste at every stop sign encountered. Despite efforts to contact local hog farm owners, no one has claimed responsibility for the vehicle or the incident.

Authorities have been unable to identify the driver or the truck, noting that a lack of surveillance cameras in the area has made the investigation difficult. Unlike typical spills that occur near landfills where drivers can be identified, this vehicle did not appear to head toward a disposal site.
