Turkey advances urban rail projects in Trabzon and Samsun

Turkey is advancing several major urban rail and transportation infrastructure projects. In Trabzon, Metropolitan Municipality President Ahmet Metin Genç announced that the first shovel for the City Rail Transportation System project will be struck on September 1, 2026. The project, coordinated by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, will feature a total line length of 32 kilometers with 31 stations across its two stages.

In Samsun, the Metropolitan Municipality is expanding its light rail fleet. The second of 12 new tramways has arrived in the city for assembly and testing. These 42-meter-long vehicles have a 402-passenger capacity and a 74 percent domestic production rate. Once all 12 units are integrated, the number of trams on the line will increase from 29 to 41.

To support these developments, Samsun has launched a series of transportation workshops to design a sustainable and integrated mobility roadmap involving academia and civil society. Additionally, a new Presidential Decree has been published in the Official Gazette regarding the terms for the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure to undertake, complete, and transfer urban rail and metro projects.
