Samsun begins autumn foot-and-mouth disease vaccination program

The autumn foot-and-mouth disease vaccination program has commenced in Samsun, Turkey. The campaign, managed by district directorates of agriculture and forestry, is scheduled to continue until November 13.

Kemal Yılmaz, the Samsun Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, emphasized that foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral illness that affects cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, and wild even-toed ungulates. He noted that the disease can cause significant economic losses and negatively impact the international trade of live animals and animal products.

Vaccination is mandatory under Law No. 5996 on Veterinary Services, Plant Health, Food, and Feed. Failure to comply can result in an administrative fine of 132,108 TL. Additionally, livestock that have not been vaccinated will not be permitted for transport, and veterinary health reports will not be issued for them. Unvaccinated calves are also ineligible for certain agricultural supports.
