Samsun couple expands goose farm after moving to rural area
Burak and Ebru Şahinkaya, a couple who left city life four years ago to settle in the Hacılı neighborhood of Kavak, Samsun, have successfully established a goose farm. After receiving a grant of 50 geese in 2023 through the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality’s Goose Production Expansion Project, the couple has grown their flock to approximately 600 breeding geese.
The farm generates income through the sale of meat and goslings. The initiative has also had a local economic impact, with the Şahinkayas noting that their work has encouraged several other households in their village to begin goose production and has involved 100 to 150 people in the industry within the Kavak district.
Looking forward, the couple plans to establish a cooperative to further revitalize the sector. With support from the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, they aim to build a breeding facility, hatchery, and slaughterhouse by 2027. Their long-term goal is to enter the retail market by selling processed goose meat in portions, rather than only as whole birds.
