Samsun doctors perform unprecedented double heart valve surgery on ALS patient
Surgeons in Samsun, Turkey, have performed a rare medical procedure on a 43-year-old patient diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). During a five-hour operation at Samsun City Hospital, medical teams successfully replaced both the aortic and mitral heart valves with mechanical prostheses.
The procedure is noted as being unprecedented in global medical literature, specifically regarding the simultaneous replacement of both valves in a patient suffering from ALS. Dr. Emrah Ereren, a faculty member at Samsun University Faculty of Medicine, highlighted that the primary risk involved the patient's respiratory capacity, as ALS can severely impact the muscles required for breathing post-surgery.
To mitigate these risks, a multidisciplinary team including anesthesiology, pulmonology, and neurology specialists developed a specialized treatment plan. Following the successful surgery and a period of intensive care monitoring, the patient has been discharged.
