Samsun launches FINDEK project to boost hazelnut yields

The Samsun Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, in collaboration with the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, has launched the FINDEK (Hazelnut Education and Development) project. The initiative aims to increase hazelnut productivity, improve product quality, and reduce production costs through modern agricultural techniques and applied training.

Ten model orchards have been established across ten neighborhoods in the Atakum district, including Aslandamı, Elmaçukuru, Erikli, Kabadüz, Karakavuk, Kayagüney, Kurugökçe, Özören, Yeşiltepe, and Taflan. The project seeks to raise yields from the current 100–130 kilograms per decare to 160 kilograms, while increasing hazelnut kernel yield from 45% to between 54% and 56%.

To reduce labor costs, the project promotes the use of nets during harvest, which can decrease harvesting labor costs by up to 70%. Additionally, the program provides equipment grants, including pruning tools, pheromone trap kits, and jute sacks. Other components include soil analysis at 100 points, free pesticide residue testing, and the use of a mobile branch shredder to convert pruning waste into organic fertilizer. The project is being implemented with a public budget of 1 million TL.
