Samsun women sell okra on sidewalks to support household incomes

In the İlkadım district of Samsun, local women are setting up makeshift markets on sidewalks to sell okra harvested from their own gardens. This seasonal activity serves as a vital source of income to support their household budgets.

The price of okra varies significantly based on its size. Smaller okra varieties are the most expensive, retailing for approximately 200 to 250 TL per kilogram, while larger varieties are sold for around 100 TL. Vendors noted that the okra season typically continues until the end of September.

In addition to okra, some vendors offer other regional products such as hazelnuts, peppers, beans, eggplant, parsley, pears, and apples to supplement their earnings.
