Samsung and Apple compete in foldable smartphone market

Samsung Electronics and Apple are intensifying their competition in the foldable smartphone sector. Following the launch of Apple’s first foldable device, the iPhone Duo, Samsung reported a more than 20% increase in domestic sales of the Galaxy Z Fold8 in South Korea during the final week of last month compared to the previous week.

Market data indicates that while Apple maintained the top position in global smartphone revenue share at 50% during the third quarter, Samsung held the top spot in shipment volume with a 22% share. Samsung’s revenue share stood at 19%, driven by premium products like the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Technologically, both companies are working toward a 2028 goal of implementing ultra-thin glass (UTG) technology that features a thinner etched center to improve foldability and surface hardness. While the iPhone Duo utilizes UTG under the OLED panel to reduce creases, Samsung has utilized titanium in similar areas, though it is also developing its own under-panel UTG technology.
