Foldable smartphone market shifts as Apple and Samsung drive demand

The foldable smartphone market is undergoing a major shift following Apple's entry with the iPhone Duo and Samsung's continued dominance with the Galaxy Z Fold8. Samsung has reportedly increased its Galaxy Z Fold8 production target to approximately 4 million units following strong pre-order performance that surpassed its 2019 Note10 records.

Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, faces potential supply chain challenges. Reports suggest assembly yields at Foxconn are currently between 60% and 65%, and Samsung Display, the exclusive panel supplier, is reportedly facing lower-than-expected panel yields. The device features a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer display, and a Grade 5 titanium construction with an IP68 rating.

Market analysts are adjusting global foldable shipment forecasts for 2026. While TrendForce projects approximately 20.2 million units, other estimates suggest growth could reach 30% if Apple's production ramps up aggressively. Google Android President Sameer Samat noted that Apple's move validates the foldable form factor as a correct industry direction.
