AI infrastructure demand drives massive growth in global memory chip market

The global memory chip market is entering a period of massive growth driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure investment. According to World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS), global memory chip revenue is projected to rise from $230 billion in 2025 to $804 billion in 2026, potentially reaching $1.062 trillion by 2027.

This surge is reflected in the data center sector, where revenue for IT semiconductor components and parts for servers and storage grew by 182% year-on-year in the second quarter. High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), CPUs, and high-speed networking components are seeing increased demand as AI accelerator deployment expands.

Major industry players are responding to this demand through strategic shifts. OpenAI is reportedly deepening its collaboration with Samsung to develop next-generation AI chips, aiming to reduce reliance on external commercial providers. Meanwhile, the 'memory big three'—Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron—are securing stability through long-term supply contracts (LTA) exceeding five years.

However, analysts warn of potential risks. While LTAs mitigate short-term volatility, they do not eliminate risks associated with customer credit or the ability of big tech firms to secure external financing. If capital market conditions tighten or AI investment slows, the industry could face renewed volatility.
