Samsung and SK hynix reject KEPCO's 25 trillion won electricity prepayment proposal

Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have rejected a proposal from Korea Electric Power Corp (KEPCO) to prepay five years of electricity costs. The total proposed prepayment amount was approximately 25 trillion won, with Samsung expected to contribute 20 trillion won and SK hynix 5 trillion won.

KEPCO intended to use these funds to accelerate the construction of essential power grid infrastructure for upcoming semiconductor mega clusters in regions such as Yongin and Honam. The utility company is facing significant financial pressure, with total debt reaching 210.7 trillion won as of late June and daily interest expenses amounting to roughly 11.5 billion won.

Both semiconductor manufacturers cited uncertainty regarding the long-term stability of the semiconductor market as the primary reason for their refusal. They expressed concerns that committing such massive amounts of capital upfront could pose significant financial and operational risks if the current AI-driven boom does not sustain itself over the next five years. KEPCO had offered to apply an interest rate higher than the 2-year Korean Treasury bond yield to the prepaid amounts to incentivize participation.
