Samsung and SK Hynix Honam semiconductor investment sparks political clash in South Korea

South Korea’s ruling Democratic Party and opposition People Power Party are sparring over the planned Samsung‑Electronics and SK Hynix semiconductor cluster in the Honam region. The opposition claims the president is abusing executive authority, calling the move “직권남용” (abuse of power), while the Democratic Party accuses the criticism of “악의적 허위사실” (malicious falsehoods). People Power lawmaker Ahn Chul‑soo warned that a criminal complaint would be filed, and the party demanded an apology for spreading “fake news.”

Blue House senior secretary Hong Ik‑pyo defended the project, saying concerns about power and water supply are unfounded and that the Honam area has ample resources – “130%‑170% surplus power” and sufficient water from the Yeongsan and Seomjin rivers. He argued the investment is a strategic, long‑term response to soaring global semiconductor demand, not a short‑term political gain, and urged focus on the nation’s competitive edge rather than regional partisan narratives.
