SK Hynix announces record $29 billion share buyback and cancellation plan
SK Hynix has announced a historic shareholder return program, including a plan to repurchase and cancel approximately 24.07 million shares of its common stock. The buyback, valued at roughly 40 trillion won (approximately $29 billion), is scheduled to take place between August 20 and November 19. This move, which represents about 3.3% of the company's total issued shares, is expected to be the largest treasury share cancellation in South Korean corporate history.
The company also raised its shareholder return target for the 2025–2027 period, aiming to return more than 50% of its cumulative free cash flow (FCF). This decision follows record-breaking financial performance, including a second-quarter operating profit of 60.54 trillion won, driven by surging demand for AI memory chips.
In related semiconductor news, Samsung Electronics has fully repaid 20 trillion won in long-term debt previously borrowed from Samsung Display. Additionally, market anticipation is growing for Samsung Electronics to announce its own new shareholder return policy as early as this month, which analysts suggest could involve significant capital returns.
