Samsung and smart wearables advance digital health monitoring

Advancements in wearable technology are enhancing digital health through artificial intelligence and continuous biometric monitoring. Samsung researchers have introduced two new foundational AI models, xMAE and HiMAE, designed to process complex biosignals from wrist-worn devices. Unlike traditional algorithms, these models use self-supervised learning on thousands of hours of physiological data to understand human biological dynamics. Specifically, the xMAE model aims to bridge the gap between highly accurate but intermittent electrocardiogram (ECG) sensors and continuous but less detailed optical photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors by reconstructing ECG-equivalent information from continuous pulse wave data.

Complementing these developments, smart rings are providing highly unobtrusive, 24-hour health tracking. By monitoring variables such as heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), skin temperature, and sleep patterns, these devices can identify physiological trends before symptoms become apparent. Clinical observations suggest that tracking these metrics against an individual's own baseline is more effective for detecting fatigue, stress, and recovery patterns than comparing data to general population averages.
