Xiaomi and Samsung prepare new flagship foldable smartphone launches

The foldable smartphone market is seeing significant shifts as major manufacturers prepare new flagship releases. Xiaomi is set to launch the Xiaomi 18 Fold in September 2026, featuring its proprietary Xring O3 chipset. This 10-core processor, manufactured by TSMC using a 3nm process, has reportedly achieved an AnTuTu score of over 5.22 million, marking a major performance milestone for mobile chips.

Samsung is also advancing its foldable lineup with the Galaxy Z Fold8. Recent iterations have moved toward a ‘passport style’ design, which is shorter and wider to improve usability and reduce black bars during video playback. While the Fold8 offers a more ergonomic aspect ratio, technical analyses have raised concerns regarding its internal structure and the difficulty of repairs due to its highly integrated design.

Industry reports suggest a growing trend toward wider, more tablet-like aspect ratios for foldable devices, a move pioneered by Huawei and followed by Samsung. This shift aims to enhance productivity and media consumption. Meanwhile, competitors like Honor are emphasizing durability, with models like the Magic V6 featuring aerospace-grade materials and reinforced hinges to withstand high fold counts.
