Samsung begins 19 trillion won investment in Cheonan for HBM and batteries
Samsung has officially commenced a massive 19 trillion won investment project in Cheonan, South Korea, aimed at strengthening its position in the semiconductor and battery markets. The investment is divided between Samsung Electronics, which will allocate 10 trillion won to modernize its High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) fabrication facilities, and Samsung SDI, which will invest 9 trillion won to establish a next-generation battery mother factory for the mobility and AI server markets.
Construction has begun on an infrastructure complex building in Seongseong-dong, which serves as the first phase of the production facility development. The building will consist of one basement level and six floors above ground, with a total floor area of 38,200 square meters. Cheonan City is providing fast-track administrative support to ensure the facilities can begin operations as early as possible.
In a related financial move, Samsung SDI has decided to sell its stake in Samsung Display for approximately 4.45 trillion won to secure capital for future growth engines. This comes amid rising global demand for Energy Storage Systems (ESS), driven by the expansion of AI data centers and the need for efficient power grid management.
