Samsung Chair Lee Jae-yong's Stock Value Surges as KOSPI Rally Fuels Korean Conglomerate Gains

In the second quarter of 2024, South Korea's KOSPI rally drove a sharp rise in the stock valuations of major conglomerate leaders. Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Jae‑yong saw his holdings climb from 30.9 trillion won at the end of March to 59.1 trillion won by the end of June, an increase of 28.2 trillion won, topping the list of gains. SK Group chairman Chey Tae‑won entered the "10 trillion‑won club" with a valuation of 10.8 trillion won, up 176.9 %. Other chaebol heads, including those of Hyosung, LG and Hyundai Motor, also recorded sizable increases, bringing the total rise for the group of leaders to about 28 % overall, though excluding Lee and Chey the average fell 8.6 %.

The rally is linked to strong global demand for AI‑related and semiconductor investments, which pushed the KOSPI to record highs in mid‑June. Ongoing corporate‑governance reforms aimed at reducing the "Korea discount" and protecting minority shareholders have further supported market confidence, even as a weakening won, rising household debt and real‑estate price pressures weigh on the broader economy.
