Samsung Electronics accelerates P5 semiconductor plant construction

Samsung Electronics is accelerating the construction of its first production line at the Pyeongtaek 5 (P5) semiconductor campus. The company is currently in discussions with major equipment suppliers to move the equipment installation timeline forward from the third quarter of 2027 to as early as the second quarter of 2027, with some reports suggesting a desire for delivery as early as the first quarter.

This acceleration follows the early start of cleanroom construction in the third quarter of this year. The P5 Ph1 line is expected to focus on DRAM and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) production to meet the surging demand for AI infrastructure. Discussions are also underway regarding the Ph2 phase, which is likely to house advanced NAND production lines, including tenth-generation (V10) products.

The strategic shift is driven by a global shortage of high-performance memory components. As major technology firms increase orders for AI-related hardware, Samsung aims to expand its capacity to address unmet demand that is expected to persist through 2028.
