Samsung Electronics shares plunge following shareholder return announcement

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have announced major shareholder return plans, leading to divergent market reactions. Samsung Electronics unveiled a massive plan totaling between 90 trillion and 110 trillion won. This includes approximately 30 trillion won in cash dividends for the third quarter and a 15 trillion won treasury share buyback intended for employee compensation. However, Samsung's shares fell significantly, dropping between 6% and 8% on the 24th, as investors expressed disappointment over the lack of immediate share cancellations and the heavy emphasis on dividends rather than direct stock value enhancement.

In contrast, SK Hynix saw its shares remain strong or rise following its announcement of a 40 trillion won treasury share buyback and cancellation program. Unlike Samsung, SK Hynix committed to canceling the entirety of its purchased shares, which directly increases earnings per share. SK Hynix also pledged to return more than 50% of its free cash flow from 2025 to 2027 to shareholders.

The broader KOSPI index faced downward pressure, declining by over 1% during early trading, driven largely by the slump in Samsung Electronics. Market volatility was further exacerbated by rising US long-term treasury yields and anticipation surrounding upcoming economic events, including the Jackson Hole symposium and Nvidia's earnings report.
