Samsung Electronics and SK hynix nearing completion of share buybacks

Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are nearing the completion of their planned share buyback programs, potentially ahead of their original schedules.

Samsung Electronics has already purchased 53.8 million shares, reaching 100.96% of its previously announced target. The cumulative purchase amount stands at approximately 14.16 trillion won. However, the company is expected to continue buying shares until the total expenditure reaches 15 trillion won, which may involve an additional 3 million shares.

SK hynix is also accelerating its buyback process. It has purchased 18.35 million shares out of its reported 24.07 million share target, representing 76.24% completion. Given its current daily purchase rate, the remaining shares are expected to be acquired within 8 to 9 trading days, roughly a month earlier than the original November 19 deadline.

Market analysts have expressed concerns regarding a potential supply-demand gap in the KOSPI as these major buyback programs conclude. These purchases have historically served to support stock prices amidst external pressures like rising interest rates. While individual selling pressure may remain high, some analysts suggest that foreign investors might return to the market following the upcoming third-quarter earnings season, particularly if semiconductor sector visibility improves.
