Samsung and SK hynix lead semiconductor market activity amid AI boom
South Korean semiconductor giants Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are experiencing significant market activity driven by AI demand, shareholder return policies, and global industry trends.
Investor interest remains high, with Samsung and SK hynix dominating search volumes and high-net-worth portfolios. While SK hynix is favored by younger investors (20s-30s) due to its AI memory leadership, Samsung Electronics remains a staple for investors aged 40 and above. Recent stock price movements have been bolstered by strong performance from US semiconductor firms like Nvidia and Micron, as well as massive share buyback and cancellation plans announced by both Korean companies.
On the technical side, short-selling balances for both companies have risen, though a divergence has appeared as stock lending balances decreased, suggesting potential short-covering activity. Additionally, credit loan balances for individual investors have increased, reflecting growing confidence in the sector's cash flow and shareholder value.
Globally, the race for semiconductor manufacturing capacity continues. SK hynix is commencing an advanced packaging plant in Indiana, USA, while Samsung Electronics is expanding its foundry presence in Taylor, Texas. Meanwhile, US-based Micron and Taiwan's TSMC are also significantly increasing their investment footprints in the United States to meet the growing demand for AI-related hardware.
