Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong marks 4th anniversary
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong will mark his fourth anniversary in office on October 27. Since taking the helm in October 2022, Lee has navigated a period of significant volatility, including a severe semiconductor downturn in 2023 that resulted in a 14.8 trillion won operating loss for the Device Solutions division.
Under Lee's leadership, the company has recently seen a dramatic financial turnaround driven by the artificial intelligence boom. Driven by high demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and server DRAM, Samsung's third-quarter operating profit reached approximately 107.4 trillion won, a massive increase compared to the previous year. Lee has also focused on strengthening global partnerships, meeting with industry leaders such as Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Tesla's Elon Musk to secure Samsung's position in the AI ecosystem.
Despite record profits, challenges remain. Experts note that the current success is heavily tied to the broader semiconductor super-cycle rather than individual management alone. Moving forward, Lee faces the task of diversifying Samsung's portfolio into new growth engines such as robotics, automotive electronics, and heating/cooling systems (HVAC). Additionally, the company must address internal organizational conflicts, improve foundry competitiveness, and restore investor confidence to ensure long-term leadership in the AI era.
