Samsung Electronics explores issuing US ADRs
Samsung Electronics is in the early stages of examining a possible American Depositary Receipt (ADR) offering. Bloomberg reports that the company has held preliminary talks with banks but has not yet decided whether to proceed. A Samsung spokesperson told Bloomberg the firm “is not considering issuing ADRs,” while sources say the idea has been revisited after rival SK Hynix successfully listed ADRs on the Nasdaq, raising $26.5 billion. Analysts note that an ADR could broaden access for US institutional and retail investors and lessen the “Korea discount” on Korean shares. However, Samsung’s large business portfolio, ongoing labor disputes, and the additional reporting and litigation risks associated with a US listing could complicate any transaction. The move remains speculative, with no timeline or size announced, and Samsung has not engaged any investment bank for a formal mandate.
