Samsung Electronics expands Texas fab, targets 2030 production

Samsung Electronics announced construction of a second fab (Fab 2) at its Taylor, Texas facility, with work to start by the end of the year and volume production slated for 2030. The expansion responds to surging demand for its leading‑edge 2‑nanometre process and is intended to serve major customers such as Nvidia, Tesla, Apple, Qualcomm and AMD.

In its second‑quarter 2024 earnings, Samsung’s semiconductor division recorded a record operating profit of about 89 trillion won, the highest ever, driven by strong memory and AI‑chip sales. The Device Experience (DX) division posted its first operating loss, attributed to higher component costs. The company said it is preparing long‑term supply contracts covering 60‑70 % of its memory capacity and expects tighter supply next year. Since 2022 Samsung has invested roughly $37 billion in the Texas site.
