Samsung Electronics faces housing subsidy fraud probe amid regional investment expansion

Samsung Electronics is facing internal scrutiny regarding allegations of fraudulent housing allowance claims at its Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant. Reports suggest some junior employees may have submitted falsified lease agreements—such as misrepresenting apartment sizes or using 'dual contracts'—to meet eligibility requirements for monthly housing subsidies of up to 700,000 KRW. The company is reportedly investigating these claims by cross-referencing submitted contracts with official building registers, and some employees have reportedly been faced with disciplinary actions or options regarding resignation.

Simultaneously, Samsung’s significant investments in the Cheonan region are driving local real estate interest. Samsung Electronics plans to invest approximately 10 trillion KRW to modernize HBM production facilities at its Cheonan campus, while Samsung SDI is slated to invest about 9 trillion KRW in its local facilities. To support its workforce, Samsung Electronics has implemented a low-interest housing stability loan program for employees without homes, offering up to 500 million KRW at a 1.5% annual interest rate. This combination of large-scale industrial investment and employee housing support is expected to bolster demand for residential developments near Samsung’s industrial hubs.
