Samsung Electronics Union Demands Tripartite Talks Over Mega Project Plans
The Samsung Group’s senior labor union, representing Samsung Electronics’ DS (device solutions) division, surveyed its 25‑member policy committee and found that 37% of respondents are considering a move to a competitor. Workers cited distrust of management, the bonus system, organisational culture, and wages and benefits as reasons for their intent to leave.
The union has established a 25‑person DS policy committee and is pressing the company for a written response by Aug. 8 on the creation of a regular tripartite forum that would include government, management and the union. It argues that the 2,655‑trillion‑won domestic “mega project” – which includes a 425‑trillion‑won semiconductor fab and AI data centre in the southwest – requires thorough preparation, adequate infrastructure, housing and safety measures, and “good working environment and fair treatment” to retain top talent.
Union leaders stress that such a collaborative body is essential for addressing the long‑term development of South Korea’s semiconductor industry and ensuring that employee welfare keeps pace with the massive investment.
