Samsung Electronics union faces internal strife and protests

The Donghaeng Labor Union, representing the Device Experience (DX) division of Samsung Electronics, is facing significant internal and external challenges. Internally, the union is embroiled in a leadership dispute. Some delegates have filed a complaint with the Ministry of Employment and Labor, alleging that the current acting chairperson is violating union bylaws by pushing forward elections despite the rejection of election management regulations and committee compositions during a recent delegate meeting.

Externally, the union has escalated its pressure on Samsung management by holding protests near Chairman Lee Jae-yong’s residence in Hannam-dong. The union is demanding direct dialogue with leadership to address grievances regarding wage negotiations and compensation structures. Members have expressed frustration that the DX division’s contributions to profitability are not being adequately reflected in compensation, citing concerns over cost-cutting measures and perceived inequities in how profits are allocated between business divisions.

Additionally, the union is seeking leniency for Choi Seung-ho, a leader of the broader Samsung Electronics supra-enterprise union, who faces legal scrutiny. The Donghaeng union has indicated it will continue its protests near the Chairman's residence indefinitely until a formal communication channel with management is established.
